More About Us
We employ instructors of a high calibre. Our First Aid courses are instructed by career professionals who are often serving paramedics with extensive maritime experience. For our fire-fighting courses we use time-served, experienced fire-fighter instructors. Other modules are taught by approved and knowledgable instructors with a wealth of experience. All the courses are designed to increase your safety awareness and we take that seriously whilst still keeping the course delivery entertaining and enjoyable.
The Managing Director of STCW Training UK Ltd is Neil Penman who has worked and played in the maritime industry all his life. He started crewing motor cruisers and small yachts as a boy in the River Dart over 40 years ago and was crewing aboard local passenger ferries as soon as he was eligible. Neil continued interacting with small vessels whilst in the Royal Navy and maintained sailing as his main hobby.
Whilst serving in the Royal Navy his previous experience with all types of boating allowed him to start instructing full-time within the service. He was a Seamanship instructor then Chief Sail Instructor at the Royal Navy’s Seamanship Training School, HMS Raleigh near Plymouth and finally RYA Chief Instructor at The Royal Naval Officer Training College at Dartmouth.
On leaving the Royal Navy, Neil has run commercial marine operations including luxury motor yacht delivery and operating passenger ferries before founding Torbay Sea School which eventually became part of South West Marine Training providing STCW and RYA training in South Devon. Neil is now an RYA Yachtmaster Ocean, Yachtmaster Examiner and RYA Cruising Instructor Trainer and an RYA PWC Trainer.
We are privileged to have trained several thousand commercial skippers and crew and continue to work closely with Torbay Harbour Authority, Brixham & Falmouth Pilots, several Super-yachts, numerous cruise lines, Antartic Survey, UK Border Force and national ferry operators and other large international companies who favour us for their training.
