We can provide refresher training in:
Basic Fire Prevention and Firefighting
Personal Survival Techniques
The price for the Combined Personal Survival Techniques and Basic Fire-fighting Updating courses is £375. This course is conducted over a day and a half; both days are spent at the same venue in Kingskerswell, Devon. The fire-fighting training is operated by our sister company, STCW Fire Training Ltd and the pool session for the half day PST update is at a heated indoor swimming pool a short distance away in Torquay.
These courses are very popular, we operate them once per month but can sometimes allow a limited number of personnel onto our specially adapted full courses to allow a better choice of dates. If booking individually the prices are:
- PST Update - £135
- BFF Update - £260
When booked together we charge £375
We also provide the Advanced Firefighting update course for those that require it. We normally offer this as the shortened half day course which follows the PST update and therefore means you can update all three courses in two days.
- AFF Update - £180

The following information should give you the details regarding our updating courses and in most cases should answer the majority of queries:
New rules that came into effect following the Manila Conference in 2010 require several STCW certificates to be updated every 5 years. In broad terms these rules took effect on 1st January 2017 and so if you hold the following certificates and they are now over 5 years old they will no longer be valid and you may be working illegally and/or unable to get work. These are not the only certificates that require updating, if you have progressed on from the basic qualifications and hold e.g. Proficiency in Rescue Craft and Rescue Boats (PSCRB), CoC qualifications etc you will need to consult with the matrix that can be found on pages 11 - 14 in the MSN which can be downloaded at the bottom of this page.
At STCW Training UK Ltd we specialise in the basic STCW qualifications and we can provide refresher training for Personal Survival Techniques and faciltate STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting and Advanced Fire Fighting for individuals and/or whole crews if required.
Certificates that require 5 year updates:
STCW Personal Survival Techniques*
STCW Fire Prevention & Fire Fighting*
Advanced Fire Fighting*
Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats
Fast Rescue Boats
* - can be provided or booked through STCW Training UK Ltd
Procedure for refresher training
Refresher training is fully explained in a Merchant Shipping Notice produced by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency and this webpage has been written to assist you in simplifying the notice(s). MSN 1865 (M) can be downloaded as a PDF from the bottom of this page. It sets out the requirements for each of the qualifications and has the necessary forms attached to enable you to provide proof of completing onboard training. In the case of Personal Survival Techniques this onboard training entitles you to complete the shorter PST Refresher course rather than the whole course. This reduces the length of the course to a half day rather than a full day.
Frequently Asked Questions
We have prepared a page of Frequently Asked Questions which we think should answer most queries but should you be unsure please drop us an email or give us a call.
Please only book the refresher course if you have completed the appropriate training as specified and have your original BFF and/or PST certificate or a CoC as we are not permitted to issue certificates to delegates without this proof.
